Hutchison-Dawson papers, 1815-1897.

The Hutchison-Dawson papes consist chiefly of family and business correspondence among members of the Bulloch, Caskie, Dawson, Gilmer, and Hutchison related families. Early correspondence between Robert Hutchison and merchant Andrew Low of Savannah and Liverpool concerns the sale of cotton and other goods between Europe and the United States, chiefly Savannah and New York. Subsequent correspondence between Hutchison and his wife, Mary Caskie regards their courtship, mariage and the birth of their two daughters, as well as her failing health. During the long periods of separation due to his work schedule, Mary Caskie divided her time between Richmond and Savannah. After the death of Hutchison's older daughter and wife between 1851 and 1852, Nannie Caskie was sent to live with Bulloch and Caskie relatives in Richmond, Va. Around her eighteenth birthday, Nannie went to England where she lived with her cousins, the Bullochs and the Harrisons. While in Europe, Nannie Hutchison corresponded chiefly with her cousin and attorney Jeremy F. Gilmer, who managed her financial affairs. Letters are primarily those from Gilmer to Nannie and include detailed financial statements as well as news about family and friends. Of particular interest are letters from Gilmer to Nannie regarding the legal disposition of her personal property upon her marriage to John Tempest Sawson in England.
