Papers kept by Rep. Fitz-Henry Smith, Jr., Massachusetts State House historian, related to his efforts on behalf of the Bostonian Society to erect a memorial for Chevalier de Saint-Sauveur at King's Chapel, 1916-1927. St. Sauveur was a lieutenant in the French army and killed in the Boston Bread Riots, Sept. 15, 1778. The collection includes correspondence to and from Smith with the architect of the monument, A. Wadsworth Longfellow; various state representatives; and French representative, Maj. Paul Azan, among others. Also includes copies of resolutions passed by the House to fund the monument; newspaper clippings; and a pamphlet written by Smith about St. Sauveur and the history of his memorial.
