Small collection of correspondence received by Charles H. Savage of Chicago, Il., from Charles H. Hart of Philadelphia, Pa., 1893-1905. Correspondence discusses paintings by Savage's grandfather, Edward Savage (1761-1817), who was famous for his portraits of George Washington and family. Also includes newspaper clippings about Edward Savage; and one letter received from a bookseller in Philadelphia regarding Charles Savage's interest in a rare book.

Charles Henry Hart was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1847, to Julia Leavey and Samuel Hart. He practiced law for a time, but then decided to devote himself to his interest in American art. He became a noted authority on portraiture, especially the works of Gilbert Stuart. Hart delighted in being able to expose fraudulent attributions.
