The William Anderson Papers contain account books, diaries, photocopies of newspaper articles written by William Anderson, correspondence, a photograph and postcard. The account books provide detailed listings of the cost of supplies and food stock during the Civil War and post-Civil War era. One of the account books includes a diary of Anderson's activities, and the daily entries include brief accounts of the weather. Two other diaries constitute separate books. All diaries detail Anderson's experiences during the Civil War and discuss the illness that he suffered on a daily basis. In addition to the original diaries, the collection includes photocopies and typewritten transcripts of them. The copies of the newspaper articles give Anderson's account of his army experiences, including his time as a prisoner of war. The newspaper accounts, which date from 1903, are from the "Plainwell News" of Plainwell, Michigan. There is one photograph of the Nineteenth Michigan Infantry and a postcard of Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Correspondence in this collection documents Mr. Anderson's efforts to receive an increased disability pension from the United States government. Other correspondence contains information on homestead land deals for soldiers.
