Dr. Edmund Ravenel, a physician, professor, plantation owner, and naturalist, was born in Charleston, S.C. and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to practicing medicine, Ravenel taught chemistry at the Medical College of South Carolina and owned plantations.
