Collection consists of family and business correspondence between the interrelated King, Alston, and Massenburg families, including orders and papers of Joel G. King, who was an assistant surgeon in the Confederate States Navy, and letters of his son Captain Marion N. King, who was with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. Additional materials include legal and financial papers, accounts, receipts of a cotton planter, clippings, calling cards, and miscellaneous items.

Built in Philadelphia as the Habana, the CSS Sumter was originally used as a blockade runner in New Orleans. In 1861, she was purchased for use by the Confederate Government.
