Papers include correspondence, assignments, and writings. The correspondence consists of letters pertaining to HOW I WRITE/2. The assignments are pamphlets of lesson plans for teaching African-American poetry in France by correspondence. Writings include LANGSTON HUGHES, HOW I WRITE/2, and a typescript of his autobiography "Snowflakes and Steel: My Life as a Poet, 1971-1980." The collection also contains an article on Emanuel by Douglas Watson for the DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY.
