Conway's letter to the collector originally had an Emerson letter enclosed. Conway adds that he has "for the moment mislaid the poems by Thomas Paine, or I should have sent it to you as a sort of big for stay of proceedings until I can manage to realise in my little property and pay off the cent & half orange... I have received from Secretary Bayard the enclosed ltter (which please return), and the pamphlet, which you need not return..."
