In Carmichael's handwriting on containers: "A group of melodies by Hoagy (unpublished) also a reel containing parts of a Johnny Appleseed suite and some other original melodies" (reel 1); "A group of mostly new ideas for song[s], Johnny Appleseed and instrumentals (8 beat) for jazz idiom on this" (reel 2). Rehearsal tapes include songs that were later published: My resistance is low, Serenade to Gabriel, and Dooodle bug rag.

Hoagy Carmichael was born in Bloomington, Indiana, November 22, 1899, the son of Howard Clyde and Lida Mary (Robinson) Carmichael. He earned a LLB from Indiana University in 1926, and married Ruth Mary Meinardi on March 14, 1936. He was the composer of many hit songs, namely Stardust (1927), and became the star of both his own radio program (Tonight at Hoagy's) and his own television show (Saturday Night Review).
