Samuel Taliaferro Rayburn was born on January 6, 1882, in a rural area of Roane County, Tennessee. At age five, Rayburn, along with his parents and nine siblings, moved to a forty-acre cotton farm in Flag Springs, Texas. One more child was born after the move to Texas, and every member of the family had to do their share to make the farm profitable. Robert L. Hardgrave is the Louann and Larry Temple Centennial Professor Emeritus in the Humanities at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in the domestic and international politics of South Asia. Hardgrave grew up in West Texas and attended UT for his Bachelors Degree and the University of Chicago for his Masters Degree and Doctorate in Political Science.
