Robert K. Merton was born in Philadelphia and graduated from Temple Univ. in 1931. Merton went on to graduate school at Harvard where he received his Ph.D. in 1936. Sociologist. Coser was born in Berlin and came to the United States in 1939. She received her Ph. D. from Columbia in 1957, and served on the faculty at SUNY-Stony Brook for many years. In 1863, a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorized five Jesuits of Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus to incorporate as β€œthe Trustees of the Boston College.” Their South End school became the first chartered college to operate in Boston in September 1864, when twenty-two boys – with an average age of fourteen – enrolled and classes began.
