The Papers of Jacob Mann consist of materials dating from 1932 to 1965. Some of the items here are related to a dinner held in Jacob Mann's honor at the thirty-fifth reunion of Boys's High, class of 1925. In addition, there is correspondence regarding the arrangements for the dinner, invitations, the menu, and several photographs as well. Also, there are numerous letters from students who attended that class, as well as others from Mr. Mann's former students and colleagues. Among Mr. Mann's former students were Lawrence E. Spival, editor of the American Mercury, the actor Arnold Moss and the art historian Meyer Shapiro. The most interesting letters are the fairly extensive reminiscences of Manfred B. Lee and Frederic Dannay the two cousins who wrote the Ellery Queen mystery series.

Jacob Mann was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1890. He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and Columbia College. After obtaining his degree from Columbia in 1913, he taught Latin at the Boys High School. He left to serve in the Army Signal Corps during World War I and then returned to Boys High School.
