Chiefly reports from various units of militia under command of Gen. Williamson and orders organizing courts of inquiry; South Carolina areas represented include Camden District, Moncks Corner, Adams Ferry, and High Hills of Santee [now Stateburg], and Augusta, Georgia. Includes report, 21 Dec. 1778, vicinity of Monck's Corner, S.C., re a battalion in Col. Richardson's Regiment, giving a list of officers and men, weapons, and ammunition; and letter, 19 Jan. 1779, written from "White-Hall," to Maj. Gen. [Benjamin] Lincoln, re his plans for military operations "agreeable to our Presidents desire" [i.e. John Rutledge], and planning a meeting with Cherokee Indians at Seneca, S.C., "to secure and confirm that Nation in our Interest."

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander. A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies.
