This collection on logging on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River was created under Craig R. Humphrey's supervision by undergraduates in his course on Wilderness, Technology, and Society (Sociology 047) at the Pennsylvania State University in 1998. Among research materials within the collection is a photocopy of an undated essay by Thomas W. Lloyd, "When Lumber was King;" a photocopy of an undated diary or log of a West Branch raft pilot, Isaac Fesler, inclusive of his annotated charts of the river; and notes on a 1963 interview with Warren Lingle, who rode the last raft down the West Branch in 1914. There are 32 undated historic black-and-white photographic prints of logging, drawn from the archives of the Pennsylvania Department of Forest and Waters, and 85 color slides of further historic objects and images (1871-1918; most images lack dates) for which an inventory exists.
