Autograph letter signed from Joseph Wright, Derby, to Mr. Long, surgeon, London [manuscript], 1790 November 21.

Wright writes: "Mr. Hodges' picture from the Merchant of Venice does neither him nor the Gallery any credit. He has not kept the poet's idea, 'How sweet the moonlight sleeps on yonder bank' - on the contrary she is glaring wide awake, & gives more light than she was ever known to do." Wright asks for Long's opinion on the subject. He also requests some "patent yellow," which he has used "on all occasions where brightness was required."
