Arthur Walton Caughman papers, 1932-1936.

Courtship letters addressed to Miss Keenan Gayden at Folly Beach (Charleston County, S.C.), New Brookland (Lexington County, S.C.), and Cedar Grove (Eastover, Richland County, S.C.); the recipient of this correspondence, Miss Keenan Wyansel Gayden, was the daughter of Quitman and Lillian Gayden. Letter, 31 Aug. [1934], written from Columbia, S.C., predicting success for Olin D. Johnston in the upcoming S.C. gubernatorial election: "You might be interested to know that my horse, [Olin D.] Johnston, lead the ticket on Tuesday in the Governor's race with Blease as his running mate. I think that Johnston will be our next governor." Letter, [pmk. 15 Jan. 1935], includes an eye witness account of a meeting of African-American educators: "I... sat in on a Negro Teacher's Meeting this A.M. You should have heard the talks & the profound dignity. I think I mocked their shodesty [sic] by chewing gum & smoking. They had the meeting in the same room we were working in. Such styles, English & Topics. Honest 'Honey' they do things in a big way. One told about teaching manners. Telling how she had taught some men to eat without sticking a fork in the bread etc. I have paid Two dollars for a seat at a Negro mi[n]strel [show] & have not enjoyed it as much." Also includes University of South Carolina mid-semester grade report issued to Keenan Wyansel Gayden for the period ending 2 Feb. 1935; and letter, [pmk. 27 Sept. 1935], written from Greenville, S.C., where Caughman reports a visit to the Woodside Building, an early sky scraper that for several years stood as the tallest building in North and South Carolina following its completion 1923: "spent part of a morning on the fifteenth floor of the tallest building in Greenville, counting gold edge securities. The man with whom we were in conference is a great grandson of the founder of Furman University, & his name is also Furman."; and letter [pmk. 3 Feb. 1936], re discussion of picking out a diamond and wedding band at Sylvan's Jewelers.
