Quotations, note cards, and other research files collected by James McBride Dabbs for the writing of his books and journal articles, the teaching of his college classes, and other projects; topics represented include quotes related to race relations, Southern culture, African American history, religion, U.S. history, English and American literature, etc. Historical materials include farm records (Sept 1936-Jan 1949), consisting of 19 account books re expenses and operations of Rip Raps plantation located in Sumter County, S.C. (Carton 3), many of which are titled, "Farm Family Record Book" which were printed by the War Food Administration of the Farm Security Administration, recording cotton picked, and estimate of cost, 9 Dec. 1949, for installation of propane gas at Dabbs' home in Mayesville, S.C.; and one folder (1952, 1978 and undated) re Salem (Black River) Presbyterian Church (Sumter County, S.C.) (Carton 9), consisting of historical sketch of Dabbs' home church, including clippings and typescripts of Dabbs' remarks, 4 Oct. 1952, at the celebration of the congregation's 200th anniversary.

James McBride Dabbs (1896-1970) was a professor of English at the University of South Carolina and Coker College, Presbyterian churchman, writer, civil rights leader, Penn School Community Services trustee, Southern Regional Council president, and farmer of Mayesville, S.C.
