G. Curtis letter : San Joaquin [River?], Calif., to Barnabas Curtis, Brighton, N.Y., 1853 Mar. 29.

Handwritten letter from a son living in California to his father in New York giving reasons for not writing or coming home in a great while and describing his various efforts at making a living. Starting with his telling of his return from a whaling voyage the son goes to New Orleans in hopes of finding work. He does find some but not enough to make much more than board so he signs up as a teamster with the Quartermaster's Dept. for six months with the Army and goes to Mexico during the war. Three months later the war ends but he cannot get out of his enlistment and he is forced to go to California where the Army is transporting the best horses and mules from the war. He closes by assuring his father that he is intent on coming home and that he is currently living on the San Joaquin River some 16 miles north of Stockton. Page 4 of the letter shows a postmark from Stockton, Calif. on March 31 and addressed to Brighton, Monroe Co., N.Y.
