Papers, 1791-1998, of the Freeman family of Richmond, Va. Chiefly consists of correspondence of historian and newspaper editor Douglas Southall Freeman and his wife Inez Virginia (Goddin) Freeman with members of their immediate and extended families. Signifiant correspondents include son-in-law Leslie Cheek, Jr., Mabel (Wood) Cheek, son James Douglas "Joe" Freeman, daughter mary Tyler (Freeman) Cheek McClenahan, and daugther Anne Ballard (Freeman) Adler Turpin.Subjects include family and college life and the health of various family members, as well as World War II, Douglas's research on Robert E. Lee, Virginia and national politics, the New Deal, race relations, especially various family members attitudes toward African Americans, and U.S. foreign policy. Also includes extensive correspondence, manuscripts, and miscellany relating to D.S. Freeman's biography of George Washington, to his writings on the Civil War and other subjects, and to his death and burial. A small amount of materials relates to his father Walker B. Freeman and to the Goddin family.
