Papers, 1880-1961, of the Pollard family, chiefly consisting of "round robin" letters beginning in 1920, written between eight siblings. Written in small notebooks, the volumes were sent to each sibling in turn in order of his or her birth, with spouses and children taking part as the first generation died out. Entries sometimes include newspaper clippings and photos; loose items were removed at some point prior to receipt of the collection and appear in later sections. Topics concern political and social attitudes of the day, including Equal Suffrage, World Wars I and II, and the Civil Rights Movement, and reflect the gradual expansion of the family members to many parts of the South as well as travel to the West and military service abroad. Among the original participants was Virginia Gov. John Garland Pollard (1871-1937), but the majority of correspondents are female members of his extended family. Represented are Mary Ellen (Pollard) Clarke (1862-1939) of Richmond, Va.; Edward Bagby Pollard (1864-1927) of Chester, Pa.; Juliet Jeffries (Pollard) Wills (1866-1935) of Buffalo, N.Y.; Elizabeth Gray (Pollard) Cox (1868-1958) of Louisville, Ky.; Virginia Gov. John Garland Pollard (1871-1937) of Washington, D.C., Williamsburg and Richmond, Va.; Ann Maud (Pollard) Turman (1875-1963) of Atlanta, Ga.; Lalla Rookh (Pollard) Smoot (1879-1940) of Bowling Green, Va.; and Grace Nelson (Pollard) McCaslin (1884-1958) of Montgomery, Ala., and Jacksonville, Fla.; and their respective families. The Pollard siblings were the children of Baptist minister John Pollard (1839-1911) and Virginia (Bagby) Pollard (1839-1918) of King and Queen County, Va.
