Born on Feb. 19, 1957 in the St. Louis, Missouri area. She attended the University of Missouri with the goal of becoming a veterinarian, but graduated instead with an undergraduate degree in animal sciences. She found work in Nebraska at the USDA Animal Research Center, dealing with "everything to do with sheep." She followed her husband Tom Nash to Kansas State where he worked on his masters degree.
