Letter to Hora's sister discussing his intention of remaining in South Carolina until he makes enough money to retire to a small farm in [New] Jersey; thanking his sister for sheet music, reporting that his wife was at church with her mother and sister, passing on news of his brother in Agusta, Ga., reporting plans for a two-month family visit to New York during the summer, and requesting a description of their father's farm. Also including an addendum by his wife, Hannah, relating news of friends, including marriage of Elizabeth Bynum to a "Yankee man named Chase" in Athens, Ga.; improvements to Columbia including a streetcar and a "new brick range of buildings built opposite the old brick range" [probably structures on north side of South Carolina College campus], reporting that she had continued to nurse her daughter Mary Eliza Jane, although the child was walking and talking; and expressing concern at the scarlet fever that was "very prevalent about town."
