Consist, primarily, of an eleven-volume diary, 1853-1879, kept by James Lawrence Hooff, concerning agricultural operations at "Richwood," "River Farm," and "Sunnyside," Jefferson County, W. Va. Included in the diaries are lists of slaves (vols. 3-5), a counterfeit $5 bill, 1850, issued by the Cumberland Savings Bank, Cumberland, Md. (vol. 1), and entries concerning John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, W. Va. (vol. 5) and baseball (vol. 9). Individuals mentioned in the diaries include Alexander Robinson Boteler (vol. 2), Henry Alexander Wise (vols. 2 and 5), James Beckham (vols. 3 and 6), Samuel W. Lackland (vol. 3), John Letcher (vol. 5), George C. Beckham (vol. 7), Philip Fontaine Hooff (vol. 7), William Conklyn (vol. 9), John Stephenson (vol. 9), S.D. Middlekauff (vol. 10), and James Roper (vol. 10). Also, includes a commonplace book, 1846-1879, kept by James Hooff at Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., and Jefferson County, W. Va., concerning agricultural operations, recipes, horses, orchards, livestock, accounts, a plat of land in Jefferson County, W. Va., and lines of verse; and an account book, 1859-1877, kept by James Hooff in Jefferson County, W. Va., concerning the administration of the estates of Fontaine Beckham and George C. Beckham (includes an inventory of Fontaine Beckham's estate).

Alexander R. Boteler (1815-1892) was Virginia political leader, congressman, and Civil War soldier. He graduated from Princeton College, Princeton, New Jersey. He was active in politics before the Civil War and much of his correspondence relates to the election of 1860 and the Constitutional Union Party.
