Railroad union financial records & reports, minutes of meetings, attendance records, books on insurance & death benefits, oaths, seniority listings, membership records, arbitration reports & proceedings, and a history file. Railroad history files include newspaper articles; articles on Union Station in Kansas City, Mo.; articles on union activities and strikes; railroad histories of landmarks from Osawatomie, Kan.; and derailments. Also included are: histories of short lines in Kansas and throughout the Middle West, listings of abandoned railroad lines, information & history of Amtrak, and legislative efforts to block the formation & construction of a coal slurry pipeline through Kansas in 1981. Correspondence between the Order of Railway Conductors & Brakemen (ORCB) and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT) (both now part of the United Transportation Union) and the Missouri Pacific Railroad (now part of the Union Pacific Railroad). Letters received, letters sent, and personal payroll information compiled by Howard L. Brown on each member in Lodge #65, BRT, and Division #137, ORCB. Information on the 1922 national railroad strike; a report on the 1948 Morrell strike in Topeka, Kan.; statements & records from the 1949 Missouri Pacific strike; and arbitration & adjustment reports. Records reflecting Brown's involvement as a Kansas Advisory Council on Aging member (1984-86). Information on extinct Kansas towns compiled by Brown.

The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen was founded in 1883 in Oneonta, New York as a protective and insurance organization. By the time of its merger with three other railroad labor unions to form the United Transportation Union in 1969, it had the greatest membership of any of the operating railroad brotherhoods.
