James Reveal was born on March 29, 1941, in Reno, Nevada. He earned his Bachelor of Science and his Master of Science degrees from Utah State University in 1964 and 1966, respectively. Arthur Cronquist (1919-1992) was a plant taxonomist whose specialty was the Compositae. He was an expert on the intermountain and southwest flora of the United States.
