Lucy Lord Howes Hooper diaries, 1862-1999; bulk: 1862-1909.

Two diaries kept by Lucy Lord Howes (later Hooper) that chronicle trading voyages with her husband, Capt. Benjamin P. Howes, and her subsequent life in various parts of New England. The first diary, 1862-63, was written while traveling with her husband during the Civil War in the Southern Cross, their capture by the privateer Florida, and return home. The volume also includes logbook notations of Capt. Howes. The second diary, 1866-1909, aboard the brig Lubra, describes their capture and the death of her husband at the hands of Chinese pirates in Hong Kong. The remainder describes her return to New England with her daughter, Carrie Bertha, aboard the Portland, her re-marriage to Sylvester Hooper in 1868, and her daily life in New England, in particular her religious reflections. The collection also includes newspaper clippings about the incident aboard the Lubra, a Confederate song recorded by Hooper, Lord family genealogies, and an unverified transcription of the diaries by Gerry Watters, the great-granddaughter of Lucy Hooper.
