Correspondence, financial and property records, and memorabilia relating to the Strauss and Read families. The bulk of the material is the business and personal correspondence of Gertrude and her daughter, Olive Graf. There are letters from Charles Strauss to his wife, Julia (1867), an 1803 Connecticut woman's diary with six entries written as a prayer for mercy, family correspondence to Elizabeth Jones, 1833-1846, recipes and greeting cards.

Charles M. Strauss came to Tucson in 1879, served as Mayor of Tucson, 1883 to 1884, and served on the Board of Regents, as School Superintendent and in other public offices. His daughter, Gertrude Strauss Read Weaver, was married to William Read (owner of the Fashion Saloon in Tucson). Gertrude had two daughters, Olive Read Graf and Lacy Read. Gertrude Weaver graduated from Swarthmore College in 1938 with degrees on German and History, and spent her junior year (1936-1937) in Munich. After graduation, she taught German at Chester High School where she and her students sent relief packages to families in Western Europe struggling to survive in impoverished post-World War II Europe. Born in New York in 1840, Charles Moses Strauss was a public servant and merchant. In time, he became a successful businessman in both Boston, Mass., and Memphis, Tenn.; and, as a member of the Democratic Party, held various offices. He married Julia Kauffman, a pianist, in 1868.
