Georgia railways : timetables and miscellany, April 1896-December 1937.

The collection consists of forty-six items that reflect the development of and reliance upon the railroad during this period. Twelve different railways are represented which, for the most part, were centered in and/or serviced Georgia. The majority of the collection consists of timetables. There is also included nine travel brochures issued by three of the railways. Two additional brochures are of special interest. The first, "The Heart of an Empire," published by the Georgia & Florida Railway in 1910 (?) was intended to induce "...men of moderate means to settle in the hear of the Empire State of the South, i.e. 'Wiregrass Georgia'" and so "...not only secure... comfortable homes, but... amass a comfortable competence." It provdes mainly agricultural information. The second, "The Resources of the South," published by Central of Georgia Railway Co. in 1901 (?) is an extensive overview of the many cities and townships serviced by the railway in Georgia and Alabama as they were "at the dawn of the Twentieth Century." Also of special interest is the March 8, 1912 Vegetable Tariff guidebook of the Southern Railway System. It lists joint, local, and proportionate rates of tarriff on the shipment of food items. Many of the brochures are undated but appear to be from the early 1920s.
