Barbara Oliver is an award-winning actress and director. She has recieved numerous Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle awards--including the first Barbara Bladen Porter award. In the late 1980s and early '90s, Oliver was acting mostly at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Oliver and her friend, novelist Dorothy Bryant, discussed producing a solo performance, Dear Master, an adaptation of Gustave Flaubert and George Sands's correspondences. They debuted it in 1991, and in 1992 Dear Master was the inaugural production of Aurora Theatre Company. Marge Glicksman, Ken Grantham and Richard Rossi are the other founders. At the Aurora Theatre, Oliver became a well-respected director. For the 2004-2005 season, Barbara Oliver retired from the position of artisitc director, passing that responsibility to Tom Ross. Oliver continues to direct one play per season at the Aurora Theatre.
