The collection (1920-2008, n.d.) contains biographical information, correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, printed materials, and photographs. The collection includes subject files relating to education in Iowa including school consolidation and post high school education. There are also materials related to Lagomarcino's work with the Iowa Department of Public Instruction including reports (1955) documenting education in every county in Iowa. The collection contains documentation regarding his work with State of Iowa and Iowa State University committees and task forces. In addition, the papers include records of the College of Education from Lagomarcino's tenure as Dean of the College. These records consist of materials from the formation of the College of Education in 1968, accreditation information, strategic plans, correspondence, committee information, and reports. There are papers relating to Lagomarcino's efforts to secure funding for the remodeling of the Veterinary Quadrangle (Lagomarcino Hall) for the College of Education. The materials include Lagomarcino's presentation to the Board of Regents, correspondence, and numerous photographs and news clippings of the renovation and dedication of Lagomarcino Hall. There is also an oral history interview with Dr. Lagomarcino available in the Iowa State University Sesquicentennial Oral History Collection (RS 0/11/7).

Virgil Seth Lagomarcino was born to John and Cora Scott Lagomarcino on March 23, 1921, in Plainfield, Iowa. He received his B.A. (1943) in political science from Coe College, M.S. (1948) in education administration from Drake University, and Ph.D. (1955) in education from Iowa State College (University).
