Vest was born in Frankfort in 1830. He received degrees from Centre College and Transylvania University. With his brother-in-law, Captain R.S. Triplett, Vest established the OWENSBORO BULLETIN in 1852, which was the second newspaper in that city. Vest served as editor and is known as the author of the essay "Tribute To A Dog," written for a lawsuit seeking damages for the death of a favorite dog.
