B. F. Young letter, 1850 May31

Young writes from Louisville, Ky., to Dr. Walter Wade of Port Gibson, Mississippi. He has arrived in Louisville on the steamboat Belle Key on his way to Cincinnati. He describes river conditions and mentions that he has encountered a number of delegates on their way to the Nashville Convention, a meeting of southern politicians to determine a course of action if slavery were banned in new territories being added to the country.

W. B. Young was born in Yorkshire and studied for his M.A. at Cambridge. He arrived in Australia in 1885 and gained prominence in Melbourne as a painter and poster designer. From 1929 to 1934 Young wrote for the Melbourne Herald as its art critic. He was also a writer and poet of some note, and his published works include Goya's Proverbs and The Children's Bread.
