Virginia Terrell Lathrop papers, 1949-1974.

The Virginia Tarrell Lathrop papers contain seven archival boxes of correspondence, memos, notes, miscellaneous printed items relating to Mrs. Lathrop's tenure as Trustee of the University of North Carolina, and one gray archival box of typescripts for Educate a Woman and Bricks and People. The collection contains material related to the academic, administrative, business, and student affairs on the sixteen campuses and is arranged alphabetically by subject. Boxes 6 and 7 deal specifically with the controversy surrounding Dr. Jack Carlton's administration of Western Carolina University. (Note: papers concerning this controversy were given in 1975 with the restriction that they not be opened for 15 years. As of 1990, these papers are unrestricted). Box 8 contains: the original typescript with handwritten corrections and notations (146 leaves) for Educate a Woman (Chapel Hill: UNC Press, 1942), a pictorial history of Woman's College from its beginning in 1891 up to World War II; the typescript and a photocopy with handwritten corrections (64 leaves) for Bricks and People : A Walking Guide to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 1973), co-authored with Marguerite Schumann; and "February 18, 1891," an historical sketch presented at the seventy-fifth anniversary convocation, February 18, 1966 in Aycock Auditorium. Virginia Terrell Lathrop (1902-1974) was born near Raleigh, N.C. and graduated from the North Carolina College for Women (now UNCG) in 1923. She worked as a journalist for the Raleigh News and Observer, the Asheville Citizen, the New York Post, and in the London and Paris offices of the New York Herald Tribune.
