The 6th Cavalry was constituted in the regular army as the 3rd Cavalry in May 1861. In Aug. 1861 it was redesignated as the 6th Cavalry and called the "Fighting Sixth." It was assigned to the 3rd Cavalry Division until Dec. 1939. In July 1942 it was reorganized and redesignated as the 6th U.S. Cavalry, Mechanized. Richard Bolles Paddock (1859-1901) was an US Army officer, close friend and brother-in-law to John J. Pershing, and one of the few American officers who died while on duty in China during the Boxer Rebellion.
