Drury family papers, 1767-1815.

Collection consists primarily of correspondence sent to Doctor John Drury of Marblehead, Mass., 1798-1815. Fifty-eight of the letters were written by his brother Thomas Drury and primarily concern business dealings. These letters were written by Thomas from Boston, Bremen, Baltimore [Md.], Charleston [S.C.], Cape Francois, Port au Prince, Kingston [Jamaica], New Orleans, and New York. There is also one letter from Luke Drury to his brother Austin Drury (1813), and a letter from John Drury to his son Luke at Brown University(1813). Other correspondents who sent letters to Dr Drury include John Blanchard, P. C. Brooks, Mary Fales, Benjamin Greene, Luther Grossman, R. H. French, Ebenezer Mountford, and Benjamin West Jr. In addition to the correspondence, there are four documents concerning the Drury family: power of attorney issued by Luke Drury of Grafton to John Drury of Marblehead dated 22 May 1790; Judge of Probate's order to the administrator of the Dr Luke Drury estate dated Ipswich 1 November 1790; account of items purchased by John Drury from Willam Crawley, chemist and druggist of London, 2 Apr 1798; and a request by Judge Sewall for Drury to attend a meeting of the vestry dated 20 July 1803. There are also six miscellaneous documents: Promissory note by Thomas Buck to Joshua Kimball dated Marblehead 28 May 1762; Will of Sarah Keith of Marblehead dated 4 October 1765; Deed from Simon Orne late of Salem now of Newport, RI to Joshua Orne of Marblehead recorded 5 November 1711; Order by Robert Harris dated Marblehead December 11, 1753 to Richard Sarle; Deed from John and Joshua Kimball of Narraganset Number One to Benjamin and Deborah Hawkes of Marblehead recorded 19 September 1768; and Will of Thomas Carruth of Marblehead dated 5 June 1779.

In 1781, Luke Drury (1737-1811) of Grafton, Mass. commanded a regiment of Massachusetts militia posted on garrison duty at West Point.
