Typescript of extracts from McClain's diary, entitled The tale of an icy cruise. The entries, dated May 22 to July 24, 1884, cover the period that McClain was serving on the Alert, one of the ships sent in search of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition. The entries were edited by Josephine B. McClain Jordan. Collection includes some correspondence concerning the diary.

In 1881 he was appointed to lead the United States International Polar Year Expedition, 1881-1884 to Ellesmere Island. He retired from the Army in 1908 and died in Washington in 1935. ...
