Donna Broderick Gavac was born in Oregon. She studied at George Fox College and the University of Michigan and received a Ph. D. degree from the University of Portland (1960). She began working at Anchorage Community College in 1971. She held various positions including history professor, Director of Academic Programs, and Acting Dean of Anchorage Community College.
