Business records and family and personal papers of a Hartford, Connecticut, businessman and philanthropist. Watkinson engaged in the wholesale iron business, was a merchant, served as President of the Hartford & New Haven Rail Road Co., and invested in the Hartford Manufacturing and Union Manufacturing companies, banks, lands in Hartford, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin, and canals. The bulk of the family and personal papers relate to his nieces and nephews for whom David was guardian. Most of these papers are bills, including a number for institutions for female education at the Hartford Female Seminary, the School for Young Ladies in New Haven, the Gothic Seminary, and for private tuition in French, and for such colleges as Washington (now Trinity) College in Hartford and Yale College in New Haven. Most of the family lived in or near Middletown, Connecticut. Watkinson served as executor for his father Samuel's estate, and for the estates of his sisters Sarah Perkins and Mary Pledger and those records are part of the collection.
