Alphonso T. Clearwater was a native of West Point, NY. He was locally educated and, in 1903, received an honorary degree from Rutgers University for distinction in public service. He was admitted to the bar in 1871. He served as the district attorney of Ulster County, NY, and as judge on the New York supreme court and court of appeals. He died in Kingston, New York.
