Philip G. Randolph letter, 1830 Oct. 1.

Randolph wrote this letter, dated October 1, 1830, as acting secretary of war to Governor Thomas Metcalfe, asking for information about Kentucky needed for a map authorized by Congress. A copy of the resolution by the U.S. House of Representatives directing the preparation of the map is written on the second page of the document. The House wanted the map for the use of its committee on commerce. The map was to be a "skeleton map" of the country, using a scale of thirty miles to the inch. The map was to designate the positions and names of all military and naval establishments, lighthouses, beacons, canals, roads, rivers, and harbor improvements. Congress also wanted the positions and extents of any surveys conducted to improve harbors and rivers, or to build canals and roads. Randolph's letter to Metcalfe specifically asked for the names and characteristics of canal and railroad routes. The letter also sought the names of towns through which turnpike roads passed.
