Trumpeter made famous by his first hit "Sugar Blues," in 1931, which became his signature work. He was noted for his use of the mute, producing a distinctive "wah-wah" sound. During WWII his band and vocalists joined the Navy as a complete Special Services unit. During the 50s the band was successful, appearing in night clubs, ballrooms and in concert.
