Nicholson family papers, 1896-1956.

Consisting of correspondence between members of the J.C. Nicholson family of Camden, S.C., the collection provides insights re daily life during the late 1920s at the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis, Md.), Winthrop College (Rock Hill, S.C.), and the University of South Carolina (Columbia, S.C.) as well as news of events in and around Camden and Columbia, S.C. Other letters describe life at U.S. naval bases during the World War II era. Includes courtship correspondence between Virginia Nicholson and Alexander ("Sandy") Salley Heyward, Jr., high school sweethearts who wrote daily while Sandy attended the Naval Academy (1926-1930) and Virginia attended Winthrop College (1927-1929) and the University of South Carolina (1929-1930). Heyward's letters describe student life at the Naval Academy: the plebe system, uniforms, roommates, liberties, watch duty, punishments, social events, sports, summer cruises, and such Annapolis events as Hundredth Night, June Week, House Party, and the Farewell Ball. Also included are college letters from Virginia Nicholson to her parents. Sandy Heyward and Virginia Nicholson were married in 1930. Mrs. Nicholson's letters to Virginia discuss economic problems of the Great Depression; including a fire in Camden (5 Jan. 1914); county fairs in Kershaw (11 Nov. 1926) and York Counties, S.C. (15 Oct. 1927 and 28 Oct. 1928); execution of Ruth Snyder (14 Jan. 1928); May Day celebration at Winthrop College (1 May 1929); attempts by an African-American student to enroll at the U.S. Naval Academy (19 May 1929); an outbreak of measles in Charleston, S.C. (23 Nov. 1942); and the opening of DuPont textile plant in Camden (3 May 1948). Primary correspondents are Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Nicholson, Virginia Nicholson Heyward, Alexander ("Sandy") Salley Heyward, Jr., Mary Nicholson Boyd, Jeff W. Boyd, George Nicholson, Samuel Nicholson, and Sandra Heyward.
