Oral history interview of USCG veteran Clyde Allen, including descriptions of his activities during World War II as a first loader on the gun crew of the USS General Hugh L. Scott (AP-136); from 1944 to 1945 transporting of U.S. troops to the western Pacific (carrying passengers and cargo out of San Francisco to the Marshall Islands, the New Hebrides (Vanuatu), New Caledonia, New Guinea, Admiralty Islands, Philippines, and India); transporting Japanese pows for interrogation to San Francisco; watching (former heavyweight champion) Lcdr. Jack Dempsey spar with fellow guardsmen; reentering the Coast Guard, after the war, and trained to become a Damage Controlman; birth of his son, the current USCG Vice Admiral and Chief of Staff, Thad W. Allen; his service as Damage Controlman onboard the USCGC Minnetonka (WPG-67), USCGC Morris (WSC-147), and the USCGC Sweetbriar (WAGL-405); helping to constuct three LORAN stations at the Batan Islands, Philippines; and promotion to Chief Damage Controlman and loading ships with ammunition during the Vietnam War.
