Sawyer, who by 1880 was "at the head of the book and stationery business of Boulder," was born in Fitchburg, MA., on 8 August 1839. He served in the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War, and after years of work as a teacher and lumber merchant moved from the Bay State to Colorado in 1877.
