Scott Carpenter was born in Boulder, Colorado, on May 1, 1925, the son of research chemist Dr. M. Scott Carpenter and Florence Kelso Noxon Carpenter. He attended the University of Colorado from 1945 to 1949 and received a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Carpenter was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1949. F. A. Boggess, professor at the University of Colorado, was the president of the Art Association of Boulder, which Jean Sherwood founded. According to an article in the Daily Camera on 13 May 1929, two hundred persons attended the unveiling ceremony. The portrait was the gift of Chapter H, P.E.O. ; and it was painted was Ralph Clarkson in Chicago. See 264-1-5 for a letter describing the painting.
