In 1911 he opened a branch at 1134 13th St. on the Hill, which was operated by his brother, Ernest. Ernest worked at that store as manager until 1945, when, after Alfred's death, the store was sold to Eb Smith. Dr. Ira M. DeLong was closely involved in the government of the city of Boulder, Colo. He was active in the establishment and operation of Boulder's city manager form of municipal government, which was somewhat of a novelty at the time. DeLong was president of a 23-member commission that drafted the city charter and constitution in 1917.
