Letter to Zebulon M. Pike 1812 July 10 - Aug. 7.

Tilden's statement on the lower part of the front side of this page states that "This may certify that Doct. Ji--- S. Berry has served as surgeon at this Post three Weeks as surgeon." On the other side of this page is a statement signed by Z. M. Pike stating that "The Asst. D. Q.M. will discharge this within account." This folder contains a holograph document signed by Rufus Tilden, stating that "Being destitute of a Surgeon at this Post and the Troopes being sickley and consequently in Want of one, I do agree to imploy Doct. Ji--- S. Berry to Serve as Surgeon at this Post untill we are furnished with one at the rate of twenty five Dollars per month." Tilden wrote and signed this at Salmon River, French Mills, on 10 July 1812, and then added a second signed statement below it on 7 Aug. 1812.

Rufus Tilden was at this time commandant of the post at Salmon River, French Mills. Zebulon Pike, who as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army led 22 men in several months of exploring along the eastern edge of the Rockies in 1806-1807, was mortally wounded while leading the American forces that captured Fort York (now Toronto), Canada in April 1813. Benjamin S. Galland was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1888. Galland began his collegiate career at Cornell University where he earned an A. B. In 1916, he enrolled in the Law School at the University of Colorado where he became a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Scribblers Club. He also served as President of Combined Laws and Junior Laws.
