Hotel register 1884-1886.

This is the guest register of a Boulder County establishment, apparently at Gold Hill, Colorado. Entries are dated from 9 December 1884 through 3 May 1885, which pages refer to the Cottage House, and 12 May 1886 through 14 December 1886, which pages are headed "Warren Marshall, Proprietor." The early pages list guests from "City" and from Gold Hill, so perhaps this register was used by a hotel in Boulder before Warren Marshall took over the operation of the hotel in Gold Hill. The names of many prominent Boulder men appear in the register. A code in the right column apparently indicates meals taken (B, D, L and S for breakfast, dinner, lunch and supper). Some of the entries contain notes that are uncommon in a hotel register, e.g. Nov. 20, 1896: "F. Boyd departed this life of single blessedness." Boyd was a Gold Hill pioneer. The pages in the latter half of the volume are blank. Guests included L.C. Paddock (who ate supper there on 5 June 1886) and J. H. Guise, father of Mabel Guise Montgomery. S.E. Brierley, who had a vegetable plot near the mouth of Boulder canyon, was a frequent dinner guest. The following entries appear under the date of 7 November 1886: G.G.G. Symns, Denver, "looking for a fraud;" H.A.W. Tabor, "looking for Syms;" W.C. Meyer, "looking for Tabor;" and a final entry "had a hell of a time." The three men stayed in rooms 164-166.
