This folder contains Professor Carey's letters to Laurence Paddock and his accompanying notes on the Third Colorado Cavalry Volunteers, copies of his class assignments with excerpts from the diaries of David Nichols, James M. Bateman, Eugene Wilder and Everett N. Pickel. The folder also contains a typed copy of James Bateman's obituary and a typed copy of the diary of Samuel Mallory from 30 April 1860 to 23 June 1860 describing a trip from Chicago, Ill., to Blackhawk, Colo.

Raymond Giddens Carey was born February 17, 1901, in Iola, Kansas. He received his bachelor's degree in 1923 from Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, and attended Hertford College of Oxford University, Oxford, England, from which he received a second bachelor's degree in 1927 and a master's degree in 1931. Eugene Wilder was born in Canandaigua, N.Y. on 14 September 1840. He came to Blackhawk, Colorado in 1863, where he was foreman of the Blackhawk Journal. In Central City he was foreman of the Register. In 1874 he moved to Boulder, where he owned and operated the News, later the News and Courier. Everett Newton Pickel, born on 6 November 1860, was a clerk at Poley and Company's drug store in Boulder, Colorado, which was owned by Cyrus S. Poley. James M. Bateman was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on 10 July 1830, and died in Boulder, Colorado, on 6 October 1898. He came to Colorado in 1860, and moved to Boulder in 1861. He owned land on the Farmer's Ditch in Boulder; his farm was valued at $7,000 in the 1885 census. In 1890, he sold his farm for $9,500, and lived in Boulder from 1891 until his death in 1898. Most of that time, he stayed at the Brainard Hotel. He was buried in Columbia Cemetery, Boulder. From the description o...
