Lewis Hanback was born in Illinois and joined the 27th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Smith was sent to Colorado in 1864 by the Noble Gold Mining Company, a group of Boston investors, to examine and report on certain mining properties in and around Central City. There he became editor of the Miner's Register, a journal on mineral resources in Colorado.
